Mechanical shutter is the only relevant part of quoting numbers. I've read on other forums that many things are included in the image count including exposure readings and image playback/chimping.
I'm not technically minded enough to understand the ifs whys and wherefores but if it is true then the "image count" would be so wildly inaccurate as to be completely misleading. I'll check out a RAF file and see how the figure compares with the frame number and my estimate of my own "blind" actuations.
